Can't Find a Group Gift? Use Area Search in Firestorm

Viewer Tip

Group gifts are often scattered around stores—on walls, inside display cases, or tucked away in corners. If you're using the Firestorm viewer, the Area Search tool can help you find them in seconds.

Step 1: Open Area Search

Go to the World menu at the top of your screen and select Area Search.

(Alternatively, you can find it under Phoenix → Area Search depending on your menu setup.)

Step 2: Enter Your Search Terms

In the search window, type a keyword related to what you're looking for. Good keywords include:

  • gift
  • free
  • dollarbie
  • hunt

Then hit Search (or press Enter).

Step 3: Use Filters (Optional)

If too many items show up, use the filter options to narrow it down. You can filter by:

  • Name – matches part or all of the object name
  • Owner – finds objects owned by a specific person
  • Description – searches object descriptions
  • Group – finds objects associated with a specific group

Step 4: Check the Results

Area Search will show you a list of matching objects along with their distance from you.

Step 5: Locate the Item

Once you find the gift in the list, you can:

  • Double-click it to place a beacon (a visible marker) on it
  • Right-click → Zoom to move your camera directly to it
  • Right-click → Edit to see exactly where it is
  • Right-click → TeleportTo to teleport to the location (this doesn't always work)

⚠️ A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • Area Search isn't currently available in the official viewer. This is a Firestorm-exclusive feature, so you'll need to use Firestorm (or another third-party viewer with this feature) to use it.
  • Area Search only works on the current region (sim) you're in
  • It can only find objects your viewer can "see"
  • Be patient—searches can sometimes take a moment
  • Capitalization doesn't matter (e.g., "Gift" and "gift" work the same)

That's it! Area Search is one of the most useful tools in Firestorm for hunting down hard-to-find items. Happy hunting! 😊

Clicked a Group Gift and Got Error? Here's How to Fix It.

Troubleshooting

You've found a group gift, you click it, and instead of getting your prize, you see a message about joining a group. But you know you're in the group. What gives?

The Problem

Many group gifts are group-locked. This means the object is set to only work for members of a specific group. However, being a member isn't enough—you also need to have that group active.

Second Life only lets you have one active group at a time. If your active group is something else, the gift object won't recognize you as a member.

Sometimes the owner sets a private/land group instead of the intended group → drop them an IM or notecard with the issue and hopefully they'll fix it soon 🙂

The Fix

For Firestorm:

  • Right-click the gift object and select Edit.
  • In the edit window, note the group name listed under the General tab.
  • Right-click that group name, select "View Profile," and click "Activate" in the bottom-left corner of the profile window.
  • Close the edit window and try clicking the gift again—it should now work!

For the/ the official viewer:

  • Click the People button in your toolbar and select the Groups tab (or simply open your Profile).
  • Find the group that matches the one listed on the gift object.
  • Click on the group name and select Activate.
  • Try clicking the gift again—it should now work!

💡 Extra Tip

If you're using Firestorm, you can add the Group Titles button to your toolbar. (Pricetag icon) This makes it much easier to search for and activate groups. You can also assign a specific group to a region—so whenever you visit that region, the group will activate automatically.
